Mid-Atlantic by Southwest

by James Conley

The United States of America is a vast country. It’s the fourth largest country by land area, and the third most populous, with 330 million residents. It is also very urban. Indeed, American cities are home to 62.7% of the population.

But those cities are on just 3.5% of the land. Which leaves the rest of the country very rural. Very wide open.

Even still, it is difficult outside of Alaska or the Nevada desert to find any stretch of road that does not have a petrol station more than 50 miles away. With more than 4 million miles of roads, that means there is plenty of America to explore and experience.

Pennsylvania is more rural than average, and is becoming increasingly urban. These images of western Pennsylvania, around Pittsburgh, give a hint of this rapidly changing population landscape.
